A tradition worth protecting

For many of us across the region, the arrival of September means the start of dove season. It’s a tradition that brings families and friends together before daylight, creating memories that are passed down from one generation to the next. At Powell Valley Electric Cooperative, we’re proud to serve many members who enjoy the outdoors, and we simply ask that everyone keep our electric and fiber infrastructure in mind while spending time in the field. Here are a few things to remember as dove season begins.

Power poles, transformers, fiber equipment and other utility equipment are built to deliver safe, reliable electric and broadband service. Please avoid placing decoys, equipment or other gear on utility poles or transformers, and never use them as a place to sit or climb. Even equipment that appears harmless can be energized or connected to high-voltage lines. Fiber lines and equipment attached to utility poles can also be damaged by gunfire or climbing, disrupting broadband services for neighboring homes and businesses.

As you choose your hunting location, be aware of nearby power lines, fiber lines and other electric facilities. A single stray shot might seem insignificant, but damage to insulators, transformers, fiber equipment or other equipment can interrupt electric and broadband service for homes, farms, schools and businesses throughout the community. By taking a little extra care, hunters can help protect the reliability of the electric system that serves us all.

If you’re hunting with dogs, keep them away from substations and other fenced electrical facilities. These areas contain high-voltage equipment and should never be entered. If a pet becomes trapped inside a substation, call Powell Valley Electric Cooperative for assistance rather than attempting to retrieve it yourself.

Dove season is one of the great traditions of our region, and we want everyone to enjoy it while helping protect the infrastructure that powers and connects our communities.
